The excitement of the Olympic Winter Games reverberated through Resurrection Catholic School Feb. 9 when it hosted its own games the same day as the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.
Students paraded into the gym carrying the flags of their countries as the Olympic song sounded and the continents of North America, South America, Australia, Europe, Asia and Africa were represented. Student teams were distinguished by their T-shirts the colors of the Olympic rings: red, yellow, blue, black and green.
School administrative assistant Terry Quedenfeld was selected to carry the Olympic Torch. She also held high the flag of South Korea because her son Fred was born there.
“Learning takes place in many ways. There’s academics but then there’s the education of getting along, respecting each other, encouraging your teammates,” said Principal Brenda Weaver. “Our school is diverse; we celebrate that each day. This means more to us because at the Olympics we see nations coming together, but here we see cultures coming together every day. We try to teach respect for them and to learn about them.”
Games featured snowball toss, skating, ski jump, bobsled and hockey, all modified to suit the students and the spirit of the games.
Closing ceremonies included a medal for everyone, music and smiles all through the halls.
